The Kangocho factory is part of the Gikanda FCS and is located just 5 km from Karatina, along the Nairobi-Nyeri highway, on the fertile foothills of Mount Kenya and the Aberdare range. The factory is fully owned by coffee-growing members and managed by an elected council. Thanks to the mineral-rich soil and consistent rainfall on the slopes of Mount Kenya, the area offers ideal conditions for coffee cultivation.
When it's time to process the coffee, farmers bring in ripe cherries, which are de-pulped using clean water from the Ragati River. The coffee then undergoes overnight fermentation, allowing the sugars to naturally break down. After that, it's washed and placed on raised drying beds where it's regularly turned to ensure even drying and protection from the heat. Every step of this process is handled with great care and attention to detail.
Kangocho also takes an active role in supporting and improving the lives of its 781 member farmers. A field supervisory committee provides agronomical advice through regular field visits and demonstration plots. Additionally, Kangocho offers welfare programs, including loans for school fees and medical emergencies, farm supplies on credit, and field days where large groups of farmers receive training in sustainable farming practices.
